Progression of me

from eighty four to now…

Living for the moment.

As we approach the end of 2014 I can say that this year, like each year, has disappeared more quickly than the last.  At this time of year we have the opportunity to look back on what was and think about what is to come.  But most importantly, it’s a time when most people have a few minutes to just breathe.  And enjoy NOW.  Life is so busy most of the year, that I urge you to take a step back, and if you have 4 minutes, I beg you, please watch this.  That is all.

Until next time!

M.O.T.I.V.A.T.I.O.N

Can you relate to any of these?

Impatience – you analyse a plan according to how it’s “supposed” to work, and often conclude too soon that it’s not working for you.

Analysis Paralysis – you keep adding additional workouts and customizations to your program, and you end up exhausted, discouraged and perhaps injured.

Extremism – you throw yourself into unsustainable nutritional or supplement schemes that are beyond your budget or just not a good fit with your lifestyle and/or abilities.

Perfectionism – you’re prone to skipping workouts when everything isn’t “just right”.  Maybe you forgot your pre-workout, your music or a piece of gear for instance.  Same for nutrition – if everything isn’t perfect you take it as an excuse to eat junk.

Ambition – you’re unrealistic in your aspirations. You set goals that are too lofty or extreme for your abilities, age or the amount of time you have. Then you beat yourself up when you can’t achieve them.

If you can, then you’re not alone!  These are hurdles which the personality type “the thinker” has to overcome.  [Check out my previous post here]  And these hurdles are often the reason behind our loss of motivation…..

Earlier this week I posed a question on my Facebook page – Was there anything in particular my followers/readers would like to hear about?  It was suggested I write a post about motivation when getting back into fitness after a break.  What a perfect suggestion!  I’m hoping by giving others advise that it will in turn motivate me too 🙂

Crossing things off the “to do” list!

Yesterday was a great day!  It was a long day, but it was a day in which I went to bed feeling a sense of accomplishment and contentment.  I woke up early at 5:15am (and wasn’t feeling too bad surprisingly), dressed and headed to the gym.  I had decided this week to do GRIT on both Tuesday and Friday morning as this week it is highly unlikely I will be able to train in the evening at all.

GRIT, like last Friday, was release 7 which involved mostly upper body (clean and presses, shoulder press etc) and cardio – squats, burpees, push ups.  I was stoked to be able to do a few of the push ups on my toes – huge achievement for me!  They weren’t very deep but it’s a start!

Work yesterday was one of those days where you manage to cross a few things off the “to-do” list.  Love those days!  I hope today will be similar….

After work I headed off to a cooking class (one of my 30 things) which I was a bit nervous about, but ended up being a lot of fun!  I am looking forward to the second installment next week!  It’s a two-week course which gives you ideas to make meals which can be frozen so that you can have a quick meal if you’re low on time.  We also got a book with recipes, tips and hints and even variations on common meals.  I’ve learnt a few things already 🙂

When I got home yesterday I was pleased to find that my “sponsor pack” had arrived in the mail for the tiger I have adopted.  His name is Hunter.  He is gorgeous!  For more information on sponsoring an animal from Australia Zoo – check out this link!  If you’re not in Australia, I’m sure zoos all around the world have similar programs.  They are such a good idea 🙂

Here's a picture I put up on instagram last night :)

Here’s a picture I put up on instagram last night 🙂

By the time I had read through my pack and had a light dinner, it was almost 10:00pm.  So I read a little bit and then headed to bed.  I went to sleep feeling like I had achieved a lot and it was a great feeling to have.  It also got me thinking about maximising time during the week – days like yesterday are so worth the getting up early for!

It also got me thinking about a conversation I had with Coffee2Words yesterday.  I discussed getting up at the same time each day, no matter what I have on, and using those extra hours to get things done.  Maybe even scheduling in the same day each week to write my blog.  I’m sure I’ve touched on this before; but it’s something I struggle with.  I’ve gotten into a good routine with my exercise, I just need to do the same with other aspects of my life.  I think it will also help down the track when I am studying.  This weekend I plan to prepare in another way – organising a proper routine for myself.  Doing the same thing each week no matter when my shift at work is!

Do you have a routine?  Do you think that it works for you?

A Fresh, New Chapter

In just under an hour the clock will tick over to midnight and it will be my 30th birthday.

Random fact alert – According to this calculator I am 10,957 days old!!!

Today was the final day in my 20’s and I was reminded of this by a number of text messages/voicemails from friends saying “Happy last day of your 20’s” or something to that effect!

As excited as I am about the 30 things I have been preparing for, I still cannot quite shake that slight anxiety I am currently feeling.  People keep telling me not to worry; and I’m trying – oh I’m trying – but it’s hard to just switch off completely.

Tomorrow I intend to get three of the 30 things completed which is exciting.  They are the letter, going to the movies on my own and I’m hoping to do a good deed for a stranger too.  I have spent this afternoon finalising my list of 30 books I am to read this year.  My list is on Goodreads – so if you would like to follow me and my progress on there let me know 🙂  I may even note the books and also the movies on this blog as I finish them…I’ll see how I go.  Either way – the final lists will go up one year from now.

So here’s to the next year.  To a new decade and a fresh new chapter in my life.  My twenties have seen many changes – I started my twenties on the other side of the world in England, to this day, one of the most important experiences of my life.

I had my first serious relationship at the age of 21, and I spent much of my twenties in Sydney.  I met many people – some who came and went, some who have remained in my life.  Every one of them has had a purpose.  I have travelled thousands of kilometres overland through Africa, and to many other countries (with many more to come!!), I’ve been on one hell of a weekend trip in Singapore for work, met my wonderful niece, seen my sister get married, watched friends become parents and most recently gained a new passion in health and  fitness.

When I look back it’s been a pretty bloody good ride the past 10 years, yes there have been some tough times too – but these have only made me stronger.  Over the past 10 years I have learnt many things about myself and the world around me and am continuing to learn every day.  I’ve been told that your 30’s are the best years of your life and I’m starting to believe those people could be right.  Every decision I have made in my twenties has led me to this moment now…and as I finally start to feel comfortable in my own skin and really know what it is I want to do with my life, I think, maybe I am ready to take that step.  Sometimes you just need a little push…and life, it would seem, is going to be that push!

So…stuff it!  Here we go!

And we’re done…

My final day at work in Sydney.  Possibly, the last day I will ever work in Sydney…possibly not.  Who knows what the future will bring, but now it’s time to say goodbye to this vibrant, often-crazy city and rekindle my relationship with the city I grew up in.

A lot has happened in the past 6 or so years.  I’ve achieved some great things and learnt some very valuable skills and lessons.  I have made some friends who I know will be part of my life forever.  I also know that there were people that I met along the way who may not have liked me or visa versa but they were a necessary part of the journey.  I think too, that each person you meet influences your life in one way or another.

So why would I want to leave Sydney?  If I had a dollar for every person who has asked me that…well I’d be a very rich person.

Honestly?  It’s just time.  Sydney has opened it’s arms to me and I’ve taken from it what I’ve needed.  Now it’s time to move on….to take what I’ve learnt and use it elsewhere.  Somewhere slower paced, with my family and close friends around me.  I’m excited for this new chapter and next week I plan to sit down and write a list of new goals.  I think I’ll do a bit of updating of this blog too….

A new city…a new structure.

To Sydney – thanks for the journey.  It’s been fun.  To the amazing new friends I now have in my life, it is you that have made the journey!

The Good, The Bad and Over Thinking It All.

Don’t you hate that feeling – when your alarm goes off and you can’t remember which day it is?  It all becomes clear it’s the weekend when the pounding in your head reminds you, you had a few too many drinks last night…and then you remember the drunken phone call…

It was the work Christmas party last night so I gave myself a pass to have a few drinks – particularly as I had made it through the 20 minute presentation in the training course I was doing – and I hate public speaking!!

Free alcohol mixed with very little food is always a recipe for disaster.  It was a good night though and I left before midnight.  It’s just the rambling, angry phone call with a friend that I regret – when you take all your frustrations on someone who doesn’t deserve any of it!
