Beauty – what does it mean?

on March 20, 2015

If each day had a theme, I think today’s would be beauty.

This year, once again through uni, I have been lucky enough to make more new friends who are supportive, smart, friendly, down-to-earth and beautiful!  Today whilst walking to a lecture with one of them, we were discussing health and fitness with relation to body image and happiness.  She mentioned to me that for a lot of people they want to change their body because they hate it.  When in actual fact, they should be wanting to change their body because they love it.  Because they want to be the best version of themselves they can be.

I can admit that I am one of those people.  I want to be the best version of myself I can be; but until I accept and learn to love my body as it is NOW, I will never get to that “best version”.  And hence why I find myself losing weight and gaining weight.  Improving myself and then just stopping.  Putting pressure on my self to make changes that aren’t sustainable and then feeling like I’ve “failed” when I haven’t achieved the goals I have set.

This afternoon I decided to go and purchase some really nice lingerie with a gift voucher I won.  Something I’ve never done before.  And you know what I felt I needed to tell the girl at the store who was helping me with sizes?  “I’m trying to lose weight” “This is the biggest I’ve been in a while”.  I felt I had to defend myself when she hadn’t even said a word.  Why do we do this to ourselves?  What makes us feel the need to explain ourselves?!

I left the store excited about my new purchase but also sad.  Disappointed in myself for putting myself down.

No, I don’t have the “perfect” body and you know what, I don’t think I ever will.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t love it!  This is who I am!  And I have plenty of positive characteristics which are unrelated to my body.  In fact, when you think of someone you know – how often is the first positive thing you think about them a physical attribute?  I bet you would agree with me when I say that more often than not the first positive thing you think of when you think of a friend is something like “they’re really funny” “they are there when I need them most” “they are caring” “they are intelligent” “they are bubbly and happy”.  THESE are the things that really matter!

Physical beauty is different to everyone.  What one person thinks is beautiful is completely different to someone else; but inner beauty can be seen by many.  And often times you can look at someone and see that inner beauty shine through.

Today I saw a YouTube video shared on Facebook by a young man named Matt Diaz who uploaded the video where he removed his clothes to show his excess skin on his body after losing a huge 270 pounds (I’m unsure what that is in kg but either way it’s impressive!!).  He emotionally discussed his fear that people wouldn’t like him anymore because of his excess skin.  It was truly heartbreaking.  The fact he even had to ask people to be nice saddened me; but I did feel a great deal of respect for him for standing up and showing people “this is the real me!”

We all come in different shapes, sizes and colours and we are all beautiful!   That is what we need to remember first and foremost.  Once we believe and accept this, we can make ourselves the best versions we want to be.  We want to be healthy and happy and we can’t be healthy and happy without believing in ourselves first.

And on that note, I’d like to share with you a page that I stumbled across this evening.  Showing that physical beauty is very different all over the world, but again it’s also the same.

Please share this post with others if you think it will make a difference.  I am seeing a lot of promotion lately about beauty and self-love and I think it is extremely important.  Please, be nice to yourselves 🙂

Until next time,
