The Temperature of Water

One random evening last week I decided to put my BCAA’s in my water bottle the night before and put it in the fridge so that I would have nice cold water for GRIT the next morning.  In the class my friend told me that she had been told that it’s harder for your body to absorb cold water than it is to absorb room temperature water.

This got me curious and so I decided to do a bit of my own research online.   From what I have found the way your body absorbs water differs depending on what you’re doing.  For example if you’re eating, it’s actually not a good thing to drink liquids at the same time, as this can dilute acids in your stomach which are there to break down food and you can sometimes miss out of vitamins and nutrients you could get from that meal.

When exercising it has actually been found that ice-cold water passes through the stomach quicker and therefore is absorbed through the intestines more quickly too.

I found this interesting, as some articles mentioned that drinking ice-cold water or boiling hot water your body has to use more energy to heat/cool the water down to body temperature.  So my thoughts are that perhaps this differs from when you’re exercising and your body temperature is raised and trying to cool you down anyway…maybe the ice-cold water in fact helps to cool your body down…

Some food for thought anyway on this Monday!

I’m going to look into it a little more – but would love to hear other people’s thoughts on the matter?  There seems to be a lot of differing points of view out there!
