Progression of me

from eighty four to now…

It’s a numbers game

on April 28, 2013

Yesterday I used my new Polar in my PT session for the first time.  I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to go as I’ve never worn a heart rate monitor for exercising before, but I found it worked quite well!  It’s pretty cool knowing how hard you are working at any one time during a training session and also seeing how quickly you can recover between exercises.

Even more exciting was checking out my results at the end of the session as per the below.

Pretty happy with that!!!

I think it is going to take me a bit of time to figure out all of the features of the FT7 but I learnt what my average and maximum heart rate was and also what portion of the session was fat burning and what portion was fitness.  I’m looking forward to seeing my results over time.  If anyone has any tips/suggestions for ways to get the best out of my Polar I would love to hear from you!

When looking at the results on my Polar it also got me thinking about how when it comes to fitness, it’s always a numbers game – how many reps did you do?  How much can you lift? How many calories did you burn?

In yesterday’s session we did some 200 metre sprints on the rowing machine again.  It’s been a number of weeks now since we’ve used the machine and I was excited that I came in under the 50 second goal I was set.  In fact on the 2nd sprint I managed 47.2 seconds.  And this is what I love – being able to see just how far I’ve come by the increasing/decreasing figures!  You can also see just how far you have to go and you give yourself goals to achieve.

I’ve always been a numbers girl.  At work I’ve always loved keeping track of everyone’s figures!  Funnily enough though maths was never my strong point!  I think it comes down with seeing how people are progressing and then being able to write motivational emails to keep people going.  I love that stuff.

Are you a numbers person?  Do you find it helps to keep you motivated?
