Body Image and the 12 Week Challenge

on January 23, 2013

My good friend Coffee2Words sent me this image and suggest I use it in my blog.  It seems rather appropriate for this entry so I thought I would use it straight away.  It’s no wonder why so many women have body image issues when you compare a perfectly beautiful, healthy and fit woman with the size that Barbie would be if she was real…..

Today I signed up for a 12 Week Challenge run through work.  It starts next week when we have to enter our measurements etc into the system and then in 12 weeks time we do it all again and see how our health and fitness has improved.  I attempted it last year but a couple of weeks after it started I got admitted to hospital and then was not allowed to exercise for weeks so it went out the window.  This year is going to be different!

I do have a goal size and weight I want to get down to, but more importantly I want to see an improvement in my strength and fitness – we have to do a few tests and list our results for those too and then compare them.  I think the trick is concentrating on overall health rather than sizes etc.  Why are women so concerned about our size?  Is it because of things like Barbie, or of models in magazines?  It makes me angry.  As long as we are healthy and fit who cares if we are a size 8 or a size 16?

Anyway, I’m going to write a weekly 12 Week Challenge blog entry and keep myself accountable and hopefully focused and motivated.  Once completed I’ll do up an entry on my results.  Can’t wait to see what the next 12 weeks bring.  I think I’ll get back onto using MFP (My Fitness Pal) in addition to Fitocracy which is doing me wonders in keeping me motivated.

Bring It On!

I wish you the best of luck in reaching your goals. BTW, I summarize women’s body image issues as “the Barbie Complex.” See how to resolve the complex:
